Attic Mold

4/14/2022 (Permalink)

Attic Mold A poorly ventilated attic led to this serious mold growth.

Often times when mold is in your home, you might not even know it. It can be behind the drywall, under your carpet, or in the case of this blog, in your attic. People don't go in their attic much, so this mold can be left unnoticed for months, even years.

There are a couple reasons that mold may begin to grow in your attic, with them being ventilation issues, improper bathroom fan exhaust, or roof issues.

Ventilation issues may stem from blocked soffits or vents. It is common for them to be blocked by insulation. Having too few vents in your attic can also lead to mold growth.

Bathroom fan exhausts are meant to pump moisture out of your home and into the outside air. It is important to check this and make sure the moisture is properly being sent outside and not in the attic.

Roof issues, such as leaks, can be a major factor in having mold in your attic. Often times the mold will tend to grow near where the leak is occurring. If you notice mold in a centralized spot, there is a good chance that is where the leak is occurring.

Does Your Evanston Home Have A Mold Problem?

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Are You Being Exposed to Mold?

8/28/2017 (Permalink)

Mold is one of the most dangerous materials we deal with. The danger lies in the fact the mold is often not easy to find. It likes to hide and can be harbored in any cool, damp place inside your home or place of business. Most people only think of showers and bathrooms as harboring mold, but truthfully, it can hide in attics, crawlspaces, closets, even inside the walls or under the floor.

Molds reproduce by forming tiny spores that are not visible to the naked eye. Mold spores are very hardy and can survive under conditions in which mold cannot grow, such as in dry and harsh environments. These spores travel through outdoor and indoor air. When the mold spores land on a surface where moisture is present, mold can then start to grow.

If you think this is something you have been experiencing in your home or place of business, call SERVPRO of Evanston for an estimate. Don't spend another day suffering inside your own home.
